STJ Football Starts Pre-Season Workouts

Posted: Updated:

There is a new look, in more than ways than one, at St. Joe pre-season football workouts.
The first new look, Bryan Jones, the Flyers new head coach. St. Joe started pre-season workouts with 24 Flyers back from last year, plus six transfers from East. They are learning new offensive and defensive schemes. Coach Jones told me the offense will run the spread a bit more than last year, utilizing the tight end more. Also, starting quarterback Jacob Bordovsky returns, but coach Jones told me he may be used at other positions as well. I asked him about how much enthusiasm he is seeing from the team in the first workout with pads. "You can see it every day. They're excited every day. Everybody's out early. There's no more pushing and prodding them out, they're beating us out there to the field. Once we get going we've had really good days of high emotion and energy. It's just lots of fun."
St. Joe football's first scrimmage is a week from Friday night at Palacios against the Sharks and Flatonia.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is going to play at least one possession in the preseason opener Thursday night against the Dallas Cowboys, coach Kyle Shanahan said.

Garoppolo will be taking his first snaps in a game since signing a five-year, $137.5 million contract in February. Garoppolo has looked good during training camp, including Tuesday's practice when he hit receiver Aldrick Robinson for a pair of touchdowns.

Shanahan said he hasn't determined which veterans will play and which will be given the night off.

Cornerback Richard Sherman was ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury during practice Friday. He spent Tuesday doing conditioning drills and will be re-evaluated next week when San Francisco returns to practice.
