Local Golf Pros Do Well At Southern Texas PGA Tourney Plus UHV Golf News

Two Victoria golf pros, finishing up play Tuesday at the Southern Texas PGA's Tradition Championship in Sugar Land. Casey Russell, head pro at The Club At Colony Creek, finishing tied for 16th after a final round 73. Russell had two birdies, including one on 18. Joe Mitchell, head pro at Victoria Country Club, finishing a shot back of Russell after shooting 77 on Tuesday. Mitchell's only birdie in round two was on number seven. Rufus Brijalba [Bree-al-ba], Head Professional at The Hills of Lakeway Country Club, recorded a 3-under-par 69 in the final round to finish the 2018 Tradition Championship with a final score of 139 (-5).
In the senior division of that tournament, David Lundstrom, playing and teaching pro at The Club At Colony Creek, shoots a final round two under 70, taking second place, just two shots behind Tim Hobby. David earns $1,100 for finishing two under for the tourney. The 71-year-old Lundstrom is a two-time cancer survivor.

University of Houston-Victoria head golf coach Christi Cano has added more depth to the UHV men’s golf team with the signing of Jacob Flores.

Flores, a 2018 graduate of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School, is a four-time regional qualifier and three-time district MVP for the Bears. He served as team captain for his team the past three years and helped guide the Bears to the District 32-6A title in 2015.

He is a four-time all-district first teamer and three-time All-Valley first teamer. He also tied for fifth at the American Junior Golf Association Preview at Cimarron Hills. He also graduated in the top 25 percent of his class.

“I chose UHV because it had everything I wanted academically and athletically,” said Flores in making his commitment.

Flores plans to study business and criminal justice while attending UHV.

Flores is the fifth signee for the Jaguars for the 2018-19 season.
