Major State Golf Tourney Heading To Victoria

Posted: Updated:

A huge state golf championship tourney, coming back to Victoria next month.
The 50th annual Southern Texas PGA championship, returning to Victoria Country Club running August 27-29. VCC was the site of the first and the 25th anniversary Southern Texas PGA championship tourneys. Between 80-100 pros from the Houston, San Antonio, Austin and the Valley areas, coming here. Two years ago, the tournament was won by Casey Russell, head pro at The Club At Colony Creek. Joe Mitchell, head pro at Victoria Country Club, who has done very well on this tour over the years, will also be playing. The winner gets an automatic berth into the PGA Professionals championship and a berth into a PGA tour stop in Texas, either the Valero Texas Open or the Houston Open. There will also be a Legends pro-am on August 27 at The Club At Colony Creek for pro's 50 and older, and they're expecting over 40 pros for that event.  I talked with some of the tourney organizers. Said Southern Texas PGA Executive Director Thomas Hutton, "The competition will be fierce. They're playing for that spot in the national event, they're playng for a lot of points and pride here in Texas. The history of this event is so rich that they want to put their name on the Aycock Trophy." Said Explore Victoria, Texas Director Joel Novosad, "Absolutely. The Southern Texas PGA has been a wonderful partner here in Victoria. They bring a lot of high quality golf tournaments."
Said Victoria Country Club Director Of Golf Breene Cantwell, "We're extremely excited. We're excited for Victoria Country Club, for the community. We're excited to bring golf to Victoria and continue to be an ambassador for golf for the community and surrounding communities."
Victoria Country Club has also been the site for the Southern Texas PGA State Senior Open and numerous major junior tourneys.
