7-On-7 Area Action & Generals News

A big area 7-on-7 Tuesday night in Victoria.
I was at Memorial Stadium, and so were the teams from East, West, Calhoun, Yoakum, El Campo and Cuero. Here are the Gobblers first against Yoakum. Michael Barta, over the middle to Marcus Gomez for a nice gain. Then Barta, into the end zone, Trent Haynes, touchdown. Now the Titans in the white against El Campo. Caleb Longoria, to Jacob Lee over the middle into the red zone. Then its Longoria, into the end zone, David Cuevas with the Titan TD. Later, Shawn Kainer, in at quarterback for East, looking deep, finding Drake Hale for the touchdown. West Warrior touchdown pass against Cuero coming up, Jordan Fillmore with the honors to Donovan Harris. Later in that matchup, Barta going deep to D'Metric Wright for the touchdown. East plays in the Corpus Christi state 7--on-7 qualifying tournament this Saturday. 

In baseball, the Generals were in action Tuesday night against the first place Brazos Valley Bombers. Kyle Backhus of Sam Houston State got the ball for the Generals, striking out 7 over 4.2 innings of work. He was helped at the plate by Zach Howard, who registered a three hit night, and by a pinch hit 2-run double for Yaniel Ramos in the 8th that put the Generals in control for good. They won by a final score of 7-4 to pull to within 2 games of the Bombers. The teams finish off their series Wednesday at 7:05 before the Generals come home to play two more against Brazos Valley on Thursday and Friday at Riverside Stadium. 

Strike Out Cancer Night presented by Citizens Medical Center this past Saturday night was a huge success once again. The Generals took the field Saturday decked out in pink jerseys and defeated the Marshals 11-5 on the night. Following the game, the Generals won big once again as the jersey auction brought in $12,345 for the fight against cancer.  This was the largest Strike Out Cancer total ever for the Victoria Generals.

This was the 5th season for our Strike Out Cancer Night and the 4th sponsored by Citizens Medical Center.  The money raised will go to mammograms for women with financial needs. Michael Williams, outfielder from Paris Junior College, had the highest selling jersey that went back and forth between bidders and settled in at $600.00.  

The Generals will have two more commemorative jersey auctions throughout the season. On July 6th-7th, we will have our Warriors Weekend jersey auction. The proceeds from this auction will go to the Warriors Weekend Organization that beings wounded soldiers to the area for a fishing tournament and a weekend of celebration.  This event is sponsored by TISD Internet Services.

Our final jersey auction, Purple Out the Park for Alzheimer's, will be held on Saturday, July 28th presented by Senior Helpers. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Alzheimer's Association to help the fight against Alzheimer's. This will be the 4th season that Senior Helpers has sponsored the Purple Out the Park jersey auction.

Over the past four season the Victoria Generals have raised over $120,000 for these organizations through the jersey auctions. The Generals would like to thank our fans and sponsors that continue to give generously to these great causes.  

Catch the Victoria Generals back in action on Thursday, June 14th as the Generals will host the defending TCL Champion Brazos Valley Bombers in game one of a two game series. It will be Victoria College Night at the Park as well as Thirsty Thursday with $1 draft been all game long on the Compadres Party Deck. Friday will be Free Ticket Night presented by Fastop/Ozarka with free admission to everyone.

    • Flyers Drop Second Straight

      After a 4-1 start to the season, the St. Joseph Flyers have dropped two in a row.  Following last week's 40-9 lost against Second Baptist, the Flyers, running into more trouble Friday night at Memorial Stadium. The blue and white were outplayed on both sides of the football, losing to Lutheran South Academy 42-0. The loss drops St. Joe to 4-3 on the season, and 0-1 in district.  Next up for the Flyers will be a trip to Fort Bend Christian Academy in Sugar Land next Friday....
