Sen. Cornyn supports Victoria Regional Airport in letter

Posted: Updated:
In a letter  to the U.S. Department of transportation, Senator Cornyn is expressing his support for the Victoria Regional Airport to remain in the Essential AIR Services Program.

The airport did not meet the essential air service program requirements last year, so in his letter, Sen. Cornyn urged the department to grant the airport a waiver to allow it to remain in the EAS Program based on exceeded requirements in previous years and other improvements.

The program was put into place to guarantee that small communities that were served by certificated air carriers before airline deregulation in the 70's maintain a minimal level of scheduled air service.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation website,
The United States Department of Transportation (the Department) is mandated to provide eligible EAS communities with access to the National Air Transportation System.  This is generally accomplished by subsidizing two round trips a day with 30- to 50-seat aircraft, or additional frequencies with aircraft with 9-seat or fewer, usually to a large- or medium-hub airport.

Without program eligibility, the airport runs the risk of losing commercial flights.

Cornyn says allowing Victoria to continue in this program will provide the opportunity to achieve this goal. That goal being to meet air service needs of the region.

This will allow the airport to continue to be a critical hub for commercial service in the south Texas region.

There is no word yet on if and when the airport will receive the waiver.
