VISD And UHV Baseball News & Refugio Track Star At Major National Meet

Big honors for two VISD baseball players.
Noah Rodriguez of West and Landon Simpson of East, selected to the first annual Coastal Bend Coaches Association All-Star team. Rodriguez, a first team All-District pick, batted .282 this season with 23 RBI's, 12 stolen bases. Simpson, a first team All-District pick, batted .316 with a homer, 15 RBI's, 28 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.  Noah has signed with Our Lady Of The Lake. The All-Star game is scheduled for this coming Sunday morning at 10:00 in Sinton.

University of Houston-Victoria senior Chase Almendarez has been honored with selection on the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® College Division Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Almendarez, a communications major from Round Rock, has a grade point average of 3.87 and was named to the All-America second team as a catcher. He is the first UHV baseball player selected for the CoSIDA All-America award.

The award is voted on by CoSIDA members and is based on a players GPA and on-field performance. The 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® College Division Baseball Team includes student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.
A great showing by a Refugio state champion in New Mexico. Alexa Valenzuela, finishing in the top 25 in four events at the Great Southwest track and field meet in Albuquerque. Valenzuela finished eighth in triple jump, 15th in long jump, and 25th in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. The Texas girls team won the team title in Albuquerque. Last month, Valenzuela led the Lady Bobcats to the 2A state team title, winning three individual events. 

During his two seasons with the Jaguars, Almendarez excelled both on and off the field. He was recognized as a 2016-17 Red River Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete, was named a 2018 Daktronics/NAIA Scholar Athlete and was on the UHV Dean’s List in the Fall of 2016, Spring of 2017 and Fall of 2017, as well as on the UHV President’s List in the Spring of 2017.

This past season he compiled a .292 batting average and led the team with six home runs, a .482 slugging percentage, 20 walks and four hit by pitch. In two seasons with the Jaguars he has compiled a .271 batting average with 47 RBI, 30 runs, 13 doubles, nine home runs and a .427 slugging percentage in 78 games.

The Google Cloud Academic All-America® College Division Baseball Team produced an average GPA of 3.88 with the first team combining for an average GPA of 3.89.
