Goliad High School Shattered Dreams

Posted: Updated:

Fake blood, staged cars, and student actors played a part in this production of Shattered Dreams- a staged drunk driving accident.

Goliad High School brought this event back to campus after seven years. Karie Wimberly,, school counselor and event coordinator says "we want to have a realistic opportunity for them to see what will happen when you approach a business or organization within your community to tell them what you're doing- they will jump on board in a heartbeat because they want to save lives too"

Planning began back in November. The planning consisted of meetings that coordinated between Goliad County, EMS, Goliad ISD, Emergency Management, Goliad Fire Department, and city officials. The first challenge was funding this project- a total of $5,000 were raised.

Wimberly says, "when you approach a businesses or organizations within your community to tell them what you're doing- they will jump on board in a heartbeat because they want to save lives too."

The accident took about an hour to unfold and clean up. After the accident the driver of the white car was mock arrested and taken away. After students made their way back to their classrooms, obituaries were read over the loud speaker throughout the building. Memorial posters were also placed to commemorate the lives lost in this staged accident.

Students learned the lessons of bad decisions, even as fake as this accident may have been- the fear is real.

Senior student Lindsey Jacobs says, "why would you want your parents to go through something that- and why would you want them to come up  to a scene with you laying on top of a car? you just have to think of other people in the general perspective of everything- not just yourself"
