Jackson County Offers Diabetes Management Courses

Posted: Updated:

Jackson County Hospital District in Edna is offering diabetes management courses. Dr. Mercado- Marmarosh sets time aside every second Thursday of the month to remind patients of healthy lifestyles when dealing with diabetes,

According to American Diabetes Association, as of 2015, 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes each year.

After being a family doctor for more than 2 years in Jackson County, Dr. Mercado- Marmarosh says the number of diabetic patients she treats has increased.
Twenty- five patients a day and more than half are diabetic- a trend Dr. Mercado- Marmarosh has seen increase in children under 12 as well.

"I think its a combination of being in an area where the food is just very tasty- and the combination of not making those lifestyle choices"

Due to these trends, Dr, Mercado- Marmarosh takes time to create these classes. She says that a consultation when a patients comes to a regular doctor's visit may usually last anywhere between 15- 20 minutes, a time that just does not suffice to share all the helpful information to a diabetic patient. These classes are designed to go one extra step ahead and get more information out there.

"Diabetes seems like it's here to stay- and I think people are catching it more now because they're going to their annual visits." says Dr. Mercado- Marmarosh.

These free classes touch upon many subjects. Healthy eating, portion control, and even tips to follow when dining out are all part of the discussion. Each class is its own individual topic, and they rotate month after month. Dr. Mercado says that she does this so new information is presented each time.

Visitor Adela Nix says  "I think is very beneficial to get this first-hand"

The group is of all ages and  Dr. Mercado adds that "it's like a community, its a group, and you feel like well if she got it under control, maybe I can too."
