West Boys Golfer Signs With UHV & Warrior Boys Golf Awards

Posted: Updated:

A big Thursday night for a West boys senior golfer.
At the Warrior boys golf awards banquet, Nick Cantwell, signing with UHV. Cantwell made first team All-District at West this season. At the district golf tournament, Cantwell finished third and shot a 76 in the final round, the best second round score in the 27-5A tourney. I talked with Nick and Warrior boys golf head coach John Schaller. Said Cantwell, "It's been a pretty big dream for me. I've always looked up to my dad with him playing college golf. It's time for me to play college golf." Said coach Schaller, "Nick's put in a lot of hard work this year and he's ready to take his game to the next level. He'll fit right in with the college. One of the best things is he'll be local. We'll be able to keep an eye on him and watch him play. We couldn't be more excited for Nick and it is huge for our program. It just shows the type of program that we have and the success that we're building."
Now for the awards to the district champion West boys, who advanced to regionals for the eighth straight year. Nick Cantwell shares MVP honors with Logan Lee, who also earned the Leadership award. Best Attitude honors go to James Debord, and Kyle Cmejkal received the Academic award.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson delivered plenty of entertainment at The Players Championship.

The lead belonged to just about everyone else.

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar were among six players who shared the lead at 6-under 66, the largest logjam ever at the TPC Sawgrass and the most players tied at the top in the tournament in 40 years.

Woods had the best score in his star group and didn't even break par. He had to save bogey on the 18th for a 72. Mickelson wore a long-sleeved, button-down shirt and posted a 79, his highest score at Sawgrass since 2000. Rickie Fowler, rounding out the threesome, shot 74.

It wasn't much better in the marquee morning group. Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth were a combined 3 over.
