French Elementary reveal brand new Educational Garden

Posted: Updated:

French Elementary revealed their brand new education garden to the public during a Thursday morning opening ceremony.

The brand new garden is part of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office's Learn, Grow, Eat, & Go program, aimed at showing elementary students the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. According to Health Agent Denise Goebel, the garden took over a year to build due to Hurricane Harvey. She adds the wait was worth it for these young students.

"It, it means the world to me. To see these kids enjoy not only the gardening part, starting off when we had kids that didn't even want to put their hands in the dirt or not know what some of the vegetables were, to actually wanting to see the garden and looking forward to seeing me come each week. 'Ms. Goebel when are you coming back?' And so, that means a lot to me. Knowing that they enjoy the program and they wanna try new vegetables "

The county hopes to continue this program by building new gardens in other local schools, although plans have not yet been finalized.

About Learn, Grow, Eat & Go! (From Junior Master Gardener's Website)

Texas Grow! Eat! Go! is a 5 year school garden, nutrition, and physical activity intervention study targeting childhood obesity among third-grade students in 28 Title 1 schools.  The study evaluated a child-obesity-prevention model based on the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH).  CATCH was enhanced by two Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service programs:  Walk Across Texas, and Junior Master Gardener.  Each Extension program improved the physical activity and eating behavior of children- both of which are associated with healthy weight.  The home environment was targeted through the two Extension programs delivered by teachers but support by local Extension agents and volunteers such as Master Gardener and Master Wellness volunteers, who could provide a strong family and community connection necessary to sustain the model.
