UHV Baseball Faces Crucial Series

Posted: Updated:

UHV baseball, about to play its last series of the regular season. Will it be their last for the season, period?
That depends mostly on what the Jaguars do in the Alamo City. UHV is right now in a three-way tie for sixth in the Red River Conference. The top six teams in the conference qualify for the conference post--season tournanent. Head coach Terry Puhl tells me his team will have to win at least two out of three games this weekend, and maybe they'll have to sweep the series. I asked two Jaguars how well their team is playing and how strong is their momentum going into this crucial series. Said catcher Chase Almendarez, "We're hot. We've won our last four series or played well in the last four series. It's different than how we started the year, especially in conference play. I can't be more excited about going into this last series. " Said pitcher Ross Bludau, "We carry a lot after taking two out of three from a good Wiley team. Taking the series was big there because that gives us a game up on them. We threw the ball well as pitchers, the bullpen did a pretty good job and we hit the ball well."  UHV baseball's final regular season series is at Our Lady Of The Lake. It starts with a doubleheader Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is out of the lineup against the Cleveland Indians two days after being hit on the head by a pitch.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said before Tuesday night's game that the 2016 National League MVP has a cut above his left eye but no concussion after being hit Sunday by Colorado's German Marquez.

"I think he's fine, but getting hit in the head is a pretty traumatic experience," Maddon said. "Fortunately, it never happened to me, but it happened to him."

The pitch hit the underside of the flap on Bryant's helmet, and he was helped off the field. Bryant is batting .319 with two homers and 11 RBIs this season.

Tommy La Stella started at third base and batted fifth Tuesday. Second baseman Javier Baez batted second, in Byrant's usual spot in the lineup.

Friday noon.
