UHV Baseball and Softball Results From Saturday

Posted: Updated:

Today was Senior Day for Chase Almendarez, Ross Bludau, Wesley Kutac, and Jacob Mihalski.

Jonathan Jimenez (FR/Victoria, TX) threw his first complete game of the season Saturday to help the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars come away with a split in a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader against the Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles at Riverside Stadium.

A week after tossing six innings of no-hit baseball in a combined no-hitter, Jimenez allowed just four hits as the Jaguars held on for a 3-2 win in the opener. The Eagles came back striking early to claim the nightcap with a 7-2 win to claim the three-game series.

Jimenez (3-2) was breezing through the first five innings with a two-hit shutout, before getting into trouble in the sixth.

Back-to-back singles, a ground out and a wild pitch plated the Eagles' first run, before a sacrifice fly made it a one-run game.

The Eagles (29-13 season, 15-6 RRAC) got back-to-back, two-outs singles in the first and Jimenez then retired 12 of the next 13 batters he face. The only runner to reach base was on a hit by pitch in the second inning, but he was doubled off first on a line drive to first baseman Chase Almendarez (SR/Round Rock, TX).

The Jaguars (12-16 season, 8-13 RRAC) scored solo runs in the first, second and fifth innings to backup Jimenez's pitching.

Garrett Harrison (JR/Victoria, TX) opened with an infield single, and moved to second on a single to left by Chase Tamez (JR/Cypress, TX). After Chase Tamez moved both runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt, Jacob Atkinson (JR/Harlingen, TX) plated Harrison on a ground out to short.

Zachariah Vela (FR/Victoria, TX) opened the second with a single to left, moved to second on a ground out by Nolan Maciejeski (FR/Tomball, TX), and after taking third on a wild pitch, scored on Maxwell Sheldon (SO/Houston, TX)'s fielder's choice grounder.

Sheldon opened the fifth with a double down the leftfield line, before Fonseca finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly that plated courtesy runner Nathan Letien (FR/Conroe, TX) for a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles bounced back scoring a solo run in the first and a pair of runs in the second and third innings to take the nightcap.

Jacob Mihalski (SR/League City, TX) got both RBIs in the nightcap for the Jaguars who plated solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Mihalski drove Fonseca, who opened the inning with a single, home with a ground out in the fourth and then had an RBI single in the sixth to plate Fonseca, who had doubled.

Fonseca went 3-for-4 in the game, while Mihalski, Vela and Derek Maciejeski (SO/Tomball, TX) each had hits for the Jaguars.

UHV Softball on the road playing Jarvis Christian. The series was moved back until today because of weather.

Jags sweeps the doubleheader 3-0 and 5-4. UHV is now 10-7 in conference. Jags will play Jarvis Christian again Sunday at 11 am.
