UHV Baseball Loses To A&M-Texarkana & UHV Soccer News

Posted: Updated:

Another two-out rally proved costly again for UHV baseball Friday.

George Gugino and Bobby Kramer each homered as the Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles sent 12 men to the plate in the fourth inning to score nine runs en route to an 11-9 victory over the Jaguars at Riverside Stadium.

The Eagles (28-12, 14-5 conference) sent 10 of the 12 batters to the plate after two outs as Gugino and Kramer led the charge with a pair of two-run home runs in the Red River Athletic Conference matchup.

The Jaguars (11-25 season, 7-12 RRAC) jumped out early scoring four times in the first as Garrett Harrison (JR/Victoria, TX) and Joshua Fonseca (JR/Pasadena, TX) reached on back-to-back singles. Chase Tamez (JR/Cypress, TX) then walked to load the bases, before Harrison raced home on a wild pitch.

Jacob Atkinson (JR/Harlingen, TX) then slapped a one-out single to right to score Fonseca and Tamez raced home on a ground out by Maxwell Shelton. Atkinson would later score on a two-out single to center by Zachariah Vela (FR/Victoria, TX).

The Eagles would tally a solo run in the second to cut the lead to 4-1, before taking the lead for good in the top of the fourth.

The Jaguars would rally back with a pair of runs in the sixth and solo runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings only to come up short.

Vela opened the fourth with a single to center, advanced to second and scored on a two-out single by Fonseca, who was 3-for-5with three RBI and two runs in the game.

Atkinson got things rolling in the fifth with a one-out single to left-center. After being balked to second, Fonseca raced home on a two-out single by Nolan Maciejeski (FR/Tomball, TX).

Fonseca pulled the Jaguars within two of the Eagles in the sixth with his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot that score Harrison, who had singled.

The Jaguars continued to chip away and pulled to within one in the eighth scoring on the lone error of the game.

But the Eagles would strike back with a solo run in the top of the ninth and reliever Caleb Baker would come on to retire the Jaguars in order for his seventh save of the season.
