USPS Rio Grande District April 18 IRS Tax Deadline Operations

Posted: Updated:

SAN ANTONIO, TX — District Manager Steven Hernandez advised the U.S. Postal Service’s Rio Grande District has no special postal operations planned for this year’s Tuesday, April 17, IRS tax filing deadline.  The Rio Grande District includes all Central, South and West Texas locations with ZIP codes beginning with 765-767, 779-789, and 797-799.

“With more people filing income tax returns electronically, the Post Office has seen a significant decline in mail volume from last minute tax filers,” said Hernandez. “With the increasing decline in customer demand, with the exception of a few late night mail collection locations at our regional mail processing plants, we will not be extending hours for April 18 Tax Day operations.”

Mail deposited in collection boxes at the following locations before 11:59 p.m. will receive the April 17, 2018 postmark.

Austin General Mail Facility (GMF), 8225 Cross Park Dr., Austin, TX 78710
Corpus Christi General Mail Facility (GMF), 809 Nueces Bay Blvd., Corpus Christi, TX 78469
El Paso General Mail Facility (GMF), 8401 Boeing Dr., El Paso, TX 79910
McAllen General Mail Facility (GMF), 620 E Pecan Blvd., McAllen, TX 78501
Midland General Mail Facility (GMF), 10000 Loop 40, Midland, TX 79711
San Antonio General Mail Facility (GMF), 10410 Perrin Beital Rd., San Antonio, TX 78284

Hernandez strongly encourages postal customers mailing tax returns to use correct postage (IRS will not accept postage due mail) and to carefully check the last pick up time posted on the collection box when mailing. Other than the mail processing plant locations listed above, mail deposited after the last posted collection time will not be postmarked until the following day.

Mailing Tips:

·         Affix sufficient postage (the IRS will not pay postage due).  First Class postage for letter mail starts at 50 cents for the first ounce and 21 cents for each additional ounce. The First Class rate for larger, flat sized envelopes (8.5 x 11 inches) starts at $1.00 for the first ounce and $1.21 for up to two ounces.

·         Address the envelope clearly and correctly, including return address, and use the correct ZIP Code, if not using pre-addressed envelopes provided by the IRS.

·         If mailing in a collection box, deposit your mail prior to the last scheduled pickup time, which is posted on each box.

Postal customers with questions may contact their local Post Office, call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777), or go to the Postal Service’s website: www.usps.com.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
