UHV Baseball Loses, UHV Softball Wins Twice

UHV baseball, out to stop a ten-game losing streak Friday afternoon. I was at Riverside as the Jaguars returned to Red River play against The University Of The Southwest. Ross Bludau got the start for UHV. He gets the loss, going eight, allowing five runs on ten hits with four strikeouts. The Haguars get RBI's from Nathan Letien and Jacob Atkinson, but they lose for the 11th straight time, 5-3. UHV and Southwest play a doublheader at Riverside Saturday starting at noon.
UHV softball sweeps a conference doubleheader at Langston Friday. Peyton Branham was the Jaguars' winning pitcher in game one, 15-3 in five .
In game two, Kelsey Tidrick from Calhoun was the UHV winning pitcher, 9-1. Gabby Davila hit a home run in game two and Alyssa Dial went 6-for-8 combined for the two games. Jaguars now 5-5 in conference.

University of Houston-Victoria junior Michelle Revels has been recognized as the Red River Athletic Conference’s Character Athlete of the Week.

As part of the RRAC’s commitment to the NAIA Champions of Character program, the conference recognizes student-athletes from member schools that have exhibited a high level of scholarship, sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility and community service. One student-athlete is selected each week based on their character and commitment to their schools and communities.

She is the first student-athlete to be recognized for the 2017-18 academic year by the RRAC.

The pitcher/shortstop from Corpus Christi, has contributed well both on and off the field for the Jaguars softball team. She has twice been named to the all-conference second team in the RRAC and was just recently selected as the conference’s pitcher of the week.

She is also a two-time RRAC scholar athlete and has been recognized on the UHV President’s List and Dean’s List.

“As a head coach, I often find myself wishing I could have multiple Michelles,” said UHV head softball coach Lindsey Ortiz. “Her teammates seem to hold themselves to a higher standard when she’s around.

“She is smart, focused and selfless in her role on the team. She brings so much to UHV softball, both on the field and off it.” 

Among the Champions of Character qualities and activities she is involved in are: 

· HOSTS mentoring on a weekly basis throughout her entire career at UHV. 

· Volunteered with Samaritan's Purse after Hurricane Harvey affected the South Texas region. 

· Volunteers regularly at a local nursing home. 

· Participated in a recycling drive for Smith Elementary in Victoria. 

· Contributed time to raise funds for cancer research. 

· Manages time well between classes, softball, two jobs and volunteer work.

· Displays respect for herself, teammates and the game of softball. 

· Spends energy supporting and encouraging her teammates.

· Serves as the ultimate leader by example -- hard working, dedicated and generous with her time.

· One teammate says: "I always know I'm doing the right thing if I follow Michelle."

The communications major plans to pursue her Master’s degree upon graduation and a career in sports broadcasting.
