UHV to host Victoria film festival screenings on campus

Posted: Updated:

For the first time, attendees of the Victoria TX Indie Film Festival will have the opportunity to watch three of the festival’s films at the University of Houston-Victoria.

UHV will host two movies on April 6 and a movie on April 7 in the UHV University West Alcorn Auditorium, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. The screenings are part of the film festival, and attendees with festival armbands or VIP passes can view the films for free. UHV students, faculty and staff members can attend any of the films shown on campus for free with their university IDs. Individual tickets are $10 for the public.

“The university has been a longtime supporter of the film festival, and as the festival has grown, the organizers have been looking for more venues to show films,” said William Scott Harkey, a UHV English lecturer and judge for the film festival. “It’s exciting to offer these films on campus, because college students often have a real appreciation for film. Today’s society is very visually oriented, and film has the potential to spark students’ creativity and stir up conversations.”

The films being shown at UHV are:

  • “Eyes of the Moon,” 7 p.m. April 6 – This film offers a fantastical visual world created by a roving caravan of creators. It touches on the mystical, the psychedelic, the divine feminine and the quest for forgotten knowledge.
  • “Bare” with short film “Dragtivists,” 8 p.m. April 6 – “Bare” tells the story of a young girl in Nevada who becomes romantically involved with a female drifter who introduces her to a life of stripping, drugs and metaphysical experiences that teach her what happens when real life catches up with dark fantasy. “Dragtivists” is a short documentary about the intersection of activism and drag performance.
  • “Hunky Dory” with short film “Game,” 8 p.m. April 7 – In “Hunky Dory,” a glam rock dilettante’s life takes a dramatic turn when his ex unexpectedly drops their 11-year-old son off for the week. “Game” tells the story of a new student who shows up at the high school boys’ basketball tryouts and instantly makes an impression. Will talent and drive be enough to make the team once they discover a secret?

In addition to the screening of “Bare,” actress Paz De La Huerta, who starred in the film, will be in attendance to answer questions after the film. De La Huerta has been in several hit films, including “The Cider House Rules,” “A Walk to Remember,” “Choke,” “Enter the Void” and “Nurse 3D.” She also played Lucy Danziger in the HBO drama series “Boardwalk Empire.”

“Paz has such a strong female voice and has had an interesting career,” said Anthony Pedone, program director of the film festival. “It is exciting to have her join us for the film festival. She uses her voice to speak out for women, and she understands the ability of creativity and expression to help people heal.”
