STJ Names Two New Head Coaches & Big Alan Weddell News

St.    Joseph    High    School    has    named    two    new    head    coaches    for    the    201819    school    year.    Today    Bryan    Jones,    STJ’s    interim    athletic    director,    announced    Michael    Blank    will    be    the    head    coach    of    Flyer    Basketball,    and    Summer    Brooks    will    take    the    position    as    head    coach    of    the    Lady    Flyer    Volleyball    program.        Blank    comes    to    St.    Joseph    High    School    from    Strake    Jesuit    in    Houston,    where    he    spent    four    years    as    an    assistant    basketball    coach.    He    has    coached    basketball    for    16    years.    Prior    to    coaching    at    Strake    Jesuit    he    coached    at    Yoakum    and    Needville    High    Schools.    His    teams    at    Strake    have    made    three    consecutive    playoff    appearances,    and    teams    in    Yoakum    and    Needville    have    a    combined    10    playoff    appearances.    In    addition    to    his    basketball    duties,    he    is    the    defensive    coordinator    for    the    Strake    Jesuit    football    team,    a    position    he    will    also    hold    at    STJ.    Blank    is    graduate    of    Concordia    University    in    Austin.        STJ    alum,    Summer    Brooks,    has    accepted    the    position    of    head    volleyball    coach    for    the    Lady    Flyers.    Brooks    was    the    head    coach    at    Faith    Academy    for    two    seasons.    She    is    currently    in    her    fourth    season    as    a    head    coach    at    Texstar    Volleyball    Club.    Brooks    is    in    her    eighth    overall    season    as    a    club    coach.    She    was    a    three-year    starting    lettermen    at    St    Joseph    High    School    where    she    graduated    in    2010.    During    her    career    at    STJ    she    received    First    Team    All-State    honors    for    three    years,    2-time    District    MVP,    was    picked    twice    for    the    State    Tournament    team,    made    appearances    in    the    TAPPS    All-Star    game,    as    well    as    many    other    regional    recognitions.    She    then    went    on    to    further    her    volleyball    career    at    Wharton    County    Junior    College,    being    chosen    as    the    Newcomer    of    the    Conference,    but    her    career    was    ended    short    due    to    an    injury.    Brooks    replaces    Alvin    Mumphord,    who    served    as    head    coach    of    the    Lady    Flyers    for    eight    seasons.    Mumphord    has    made    the    decision    to    step    down    as    head    volleyball    coach,    but    will    continue    to    coach    at    STJ.    
    “I    am    looking    forward    to    welcoming    these    coaches    to    St.    Joseph    High    School,”    said    Jones.    “Their    prior    coaching    and    playing    experiences    will    help    cultivate    a    competitive    culture    here    at    STJ,    and    help    us    to    push    our    athletic    programs    to    the    next    level    of    success.”      

Former victoria high football head coach Alan Weddell will be inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall Of Honor this summer. After leading the Stingarees to three playoff trips in four years from 1986-89, Weddell coached La Marque to three straight state championships and five consecutive appearances in the state title game.  He'll be inducted July 21 at the Hyatt Grand Hotel in San Antonio.
