UHV Small Business Development Center brings QuickBooks 2018 series to Hallettsville

Posted: Updated:

This year marks the first time the University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center’s QuickBooks workshop series will be offered outside Victoria.

The series will be co-hosted by UHV’s SBDC and the Hallettsville Chamber of Commerce from 6 to 8 p.m. every Monday starting March 5 through April 9 at the Hallettsville Chamber, 1614 N. Texana St. The registration deadline is March 1.

The QuickBooks Series is a set of six interactive weekly workshops about the latest version of the software and is intended to help Crossroads entrepreneurs improve their bookkeeping skills and learn more about the accounting software.

“QuickBooks is a helpful tool for small business owners, and we saw a desire in the area to learn more about this software,” UHV SBDC Director Joe Humphreys said. “We want to help people get started on the right foot. It’s much easier to start off well than to go back and fix your problems.”

The series was developed to help individual business owners who already have the program and might be struggling to understand the system. It’s a great hands-on learning experience for entrepreneurs who also are starting to use the QuickBooks software, Humphreys said.

During the first session, attendees will receive an introduction to the software and learn the basics of how to input information while using different tools. The rest of the sessions will allow attendees to build a company profile in the software and learn step by step how to do tasks such as financial analyses or reporting.

“The Hallettsville Chamber, along with the UHV SBDC and the UHV School of Business Administration, are dedicated to helping small businesses in the area succeed,” UHV SBDC director Joe Humphreys said. “This series will give people a working knowledge of one of the most well-known accounting programs available.”

The course will be taught by UHV SBDC business advisor Shirley Sommer, a QuickBooks Pro advisor who has been trained and certified by QuickBooks to teach the course.

The other workshop dates and topics will be:

  • March 12 – Setting Up a Chart of Accounts
  • March 19 – Creating and Working with Lists
  • March 26 – Entering and Paying Bills
  • April 2 – Receiving Payments and Making Deposits
  • April 9 – Analyzing Financial Data

Attendees can attend all or several of the workshops, depending on their interest in the topics covered. A discount will be available for preregistered attendees. There is a preregistration fee of $40 for each class or $50 at the door, and $200 to attend the entire series.

To preregister for the QuickBooks Series or individual workshops, visit the UHV SBDC website at www.uhvsbdc.org or call the office at 361-485-4485.

The UHV SBDC offers assistance on starting, growing and financing a business; contracting opportunities; and recovering from disaster. Most of its services are free to area small business owners in Aransas, Bee, Calhoun, DeWitt, Gonzales, Goliad, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties. It is part of a nationwide small business assistance program serving the community, and federal, state and local governments.
