VISD Softball Preview

Posted: Updated:

VISD softball season starts Tuesday night. East finished in fifth place in district play last year. Head coach Melissa Buck has six varsity players back from 2017, all of them starters, with two of them making the All-District team a year ago. Coach Buck told me how good her team looks in the pre-season workouts and scrimmages. "We have some little inconsistencies hitting-wise right now. We've looked a little better defensively than I expected. Normally early on that's a little shaky for us but defensively we've been pretty solid."
John White begins his first full season as West softball head coach. After he took over as interim coach late last season, the Warriors finished in sixth place in district. Four varsity players are back from that year, with three starters returning, including first team All-District center fielder Courtney Marthiljohni. I asked coach White about the lack of experienced players back from 2017. "It's been good for us. We've been able to focus on the fundamentals, start with a fresh foundation and some new faces. It's really been a good thing for us this year."  At 6:30 Tuesday night, West softball opens the season at Orange Grove, while East softball starts the season at Calallen.

    • Refugio Drubs Yorktown, Advances to Area Round

The Bobcats' offense looks like it can't be stopped. Refugio defeated Yorktown 75-0 in Karnes City on Friday, marking the sixth straight week the team has eclipsed the 55-point threshold. The Bobcats have posted 75 points or more three times during that stretch.  Refugio dominated from start to finish in the 2A division I bi-district, scoring 42 unanswered points in the first half to put the game out of reach early.  Next up for the Bobcats will be an area round clash aga...
    • Industrial takes on Rice Consolidated

Industrial football, looking to make as long a run as its volleyball team did in the playoffs. Our David Gibson, at Ricebird stadium for the Cobras and Rice Consolidated, 3a division one bi-district. First play of the game Rice's Devin Sims takes the hand off and runs for a big gain before being tackled.  On the same drive the Raiders running back takes the ball and barrels his way all the way down to the 2 yard line.

    • Yoakum Pulls Away Late, Beats Columbus

It wasn't pretty at times, but the Bulldogs got it done.  Yoakum beat Columbus, 30-13, in Hallettsville on Friday, pulling away in the fourth quarter to punch their ticket to the area round for the second consecutive season. After a pair of costly first half turnovers, Yoakum tightened up their play and held the Cardinals scoreless in the second half in front of a friendly crowd.  After scoring on their first possession of the game, the Bulldogs ran into trouble after quar...
