UHV Softball Set To Start Season

Posted: Updated:

UHV softball starts the season on the road Friday. The University of Houston-Victoria softball team got the 2017 season off on the right start last season going 4-1 at the NAIA College Cowtown Classic.

The Jaguars will be looking for the same kind of start this Friday and Saturday when the open the 2018 season in Fort Worth at the annual Cowtown event played at Gateway Park.

Last year the Jaguars faced two top-20 teams in their five games at the tournament, losing only to top-ranked Oklahoma City 4-1. They will not face any ranked opponents this year, but should still expect to face five quality opponents in Baker University (Kan.), Bethel College (Kan.), Bethany College (Kan.), Oklahoma Wesleyan and Texas Wesleyan.

The Jaguars will open the tournament facing the three Kansas schools on Friday. Baker will be the first opponent in a 9 a.m. contest, with Bethel to follow at 1 p.m., before Bethany finishes the day at 5 p.m.

The Jaguars will have back-to-back games on Saturday when the open with Texas Wesleyan at 1 p.m. and wrap up the weekend against Oklahoma Wesleyan at 3 p.m.

The Jaguars have never played Baker or Oklahoma Wesleyan in their 10-year history, but are familiar opponents with the other three teams, especially Texas Wesleyan.

The Jaguars are 1-1 against Bethel losing the first meeting between the two schools in 2010 by a 5-3 count, before picking up a 4-3 victory in 2016.

UHV grabbed a 13-4 win over Bethany in their only meeting in 2008.

Against Texas Wesleyan the Jaguars hold a 9-1 series lead and have won the last two meetings between the two schools, 4-3 in 2016 and 4-0 in 2017, both at the Cowtown Classic. The Rams snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Jaguars in 2015 with a 4-0 victory in the Cowtown Classic.

The Jaguars have shutout the Rams four times and have outscored TWU 58-15 in the all-time series.

UHV enters the year coming off a 33-19 season and return nine players from last year's squad including pitchers Michelle Revels (JR/Corpus Christi, TX), Torey Dumont (JR/Pleasanton, TX) and Kelsey Tidrick (SO/Port Lavaca, TX). Adding depth to the Jaguars pitching staff will be newcomers Cheyenne Galindo (FR/Ganado, TX), Peyton Branham (JR/Houston, TX), and Jackie Longoria (FR/Edinburg, TX).

Returning position players for the Jaguars include Madeline Herrera (SR/Baytown, Texas), Alyssa Dial (SR/Victoria, TX), Jordan Hoefling (JR/Victoria, TX), Gabby Davila (JR/Houston, TX), Emily Flores (SO/Houston, TX) and Marissa Longoria (SO/Houston, TX).  Others adding depth include Lisa Sosa (FR/Corpus Christi, TX), Angelica Davidson (SO/Portland, TX), Alexis Carabajal (FR/Port Lavaca, TX), Ashley Adkins (FR/Friendswood, TX), Ashley Reyna (FR/Harlingen, TX), Madison Kucera (SR/Edna, TX), Alyssa Adames (JR/Victoria, TX), Faith Lee (FR/Conroe) and Kayla Tisdale (FR/Santa Fe).

The tournament will also serve as key preparation for the Jaguars who jump into Red River Athletic Conference action the following week when they face Huston-Tillotson in a three-game series on Feb. 16-17.

The Jaguars will be on the road for the whole month of February and will not open at home until Feb. 9-10 when they host Texas A&M-Texarkana in a three-game RRAC series.
