UHV Baseball Starts Pre-Season Workouts

Posted: Updated:

The weather finally cooperated with UHV baseball Thursday afternoon. After two postponements, the Jaguars started pre-season workouts. UHV returns six defensive starters and four starting pitchers from last year's squad and are ranked seventh in the conference poll entering the 2018 season. Among the starters returning are Jacob Atkinson, Joshua Fonseca, Chase Almendarez, Garrett Gray-Mathis, Chase Tamez and Derek Maciejeski, along with pitchers Ross Bludau, Collin Quinn from El Campo and Nathaniel Pena. Victorians on the UHV team include Jonathan Jimenez, Zach Vela, Alec Cruz, Garrett Harrison, Gavin Trevino and Brandon Tipton. I talked with head coach Terry Puhl. "It's a balmy 42 degrees but the guys are very excited to be out on the field. Having a new turf here at Riverside is just outstanding. We'll take the next three days to go very slow, acclimate ourselves to the new field."
UHV baseball starts season number 11 by hosting Trinity in a three-game series at Riverside Stadium. The series starts February 9.

Auburn has settled a federal lawsuit filed by former baseball coach Sunny Golloway.
Auburn and Golloway informed U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles S. Coody of the settlement agreement Tuesday, according to court filings.
An Auburn spokesman and Golloway's attorney, John Saxon, both declined to elaborate beyond saying "the matter has been resolved." Saxon had filed a motion to withdraw from the case on Jan. 12.
Golloway had been seeking payment of a $1 million buyout contending he was wrongfully terminated.
He sued the university board of trustees, athletic director Jay Jacobs and other athletic officials. Auburn fired Golloway "with cause" in September 2015 and later said he "knowingly and repeatedly broke Auburn and NCAA rules, including an attempt to destroy evidence of his violations."
