UHV Softball Makes NAIA National Poll

Posted: Updated:

UHV softball will start the season nationally ranked. The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars enter the 2018 softball season ranked No. 24 in the NAIA Preseason Softball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

The ranking is the highest preseason ranking for the Jaguars in their previous eight rankings. Their best preseason ranking was at No. 10 in the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

The Jaguars are one of two Red River Athletic Conference teams ranked in the poll entering the season. LSU-Alexandria, which finished third at the NAIA Softball World Series last year, is ranked No. 20.

Ten-time and defending national champion Oklahoma City is the preseason favorite to repeat its title. OCU received all 19 first-place votes and 529 points in the voting to hold down the No. 1 spot.

Following OCU at No. 2 is Columbia (Mo.) with 506 points in the voting, while Southern Oregon is No. 3 and Marion (Ind.) is No. 4. Brenau (Ga.) and Corbin (Ore.) share the No. 5 spot.

The Jaguars failed to make the preseason Top 25 in the 2016 season for the first time since not being ranked in their initial season in 2008. The Jaguars broke into the poll at No. 14 in 2009, followed that with a No. 13 ranking in 2010 and a No. 19 ranks in 2011.

After back-to-back years at No. 10 in 2012 and 2013, the Jaguars shared the No. 15 spot in 2014 and were at No. 18 in 2015. Last year the Jaguars also began the year ranked at No. 18.

UHV and LSUA share the top spot in the Red River Athletic Conference preseason poll, with Our Lady of the Lake third and Huston-Tillotson fourth.
