UHV Sports Practices Affected By Weather

Posted: Updated:

Weather is changing plans for two UHV teams.  Weather gets in the way of the start of one UHV team's pre-season practices.Jjaguar baseball, moving its first practice back a day to Wednesday. Head coach Terry Puhl told me it's because of freezing rain conditions in the forecast. UHV softball moved up its first pre-season practice by an hour and a half Monday. The Jaguars return nine players from last year's team that finished second in the Red River Conference tournament. Seven starters are back, including Red River All-Conference players like Gabby Davila, Michelle Revels and Torey Dumont. Area players returning to UHV include Jordan Hoefling, Alyssa Dial, and Kelsey Tidrick. They are joined by area newcomers like Cheyenne Galindo, Alexis Carbajal, Alyssa Adames, and Madison Kucera, who is one of three seniors on the team. I talked with the other two Monday.  Said Jaguars OF-2B-3B Madeline Herrera\, "I'm excited. It's my last time to play this year. We have a good bunch of girls and I wouldn't want to end it with anybody else." Said, outfielder Alyssa Dial, "It's very exciting. I feel we have an awesome team coming in. We have a bunch of new people but  we mesh well and that's good on and off the field."
UHV softball's first pre-season scrimmages come next Tuesday afternoon at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex. The Jaguars take on Taylor University from Indiana in a doubleheader starting at one.

    • Yoakum Pulls Away Late, Beats Columbus

It wasn't pretty at times, but the Bulldogs got it done.  Yoakum beat Columbus, 30-13, in Hallettsville on Friday, pulling away in the fourth quarter to punch their ticket to the area round for the second consecutive season. After a pair of costly first half turnovers, Yoakum tightened up their play and held the Cardinals scoreless in the second half in front of a friendly crowd.  After scoring on their first possession of the game, the Bulldogs ran into trouble after quar...
