Area H.S. Basketball Highlights & Scores 1/9

Here are Tuesday night's area high school basketball scores and stats. West girls basketball stays in a tie for the district lead. The Warrior girls hosted Lamar Consolidated. Inbounds pass to Kennedy Youngblood for two. Inbounds to Carrie Lacy, trey, no, but she follows her shot to get two of her game-high 15 points. 13 for Jozlyn Washington as the West girls stay in first with a 62-44 win.  West girls basketball, now 5-1 in 27-5A, winds up the first half of district play Friday night at Fulshear. At East, the Titan boys went for their first district hoops win. They hosted Calhoun. Titans in white, Wallace McNary, trey, bien. 11 points for McNary. Quincy Johnson, nice drive and dish to Ed Clay. 11 points apiece for them, but East falls to 0-4 in district, the Sandcrabs taking the 47-45 win. Friday night, East boys basketball plays at Rosenberg Terry.  East girls basketball wins in OT on the road  at Calhoun, 39-36,to improve to 4-2 in district. Leilani Wimbish-Gay leads the titans with 11 points, 10 for Imani Wimbish-Gay. West boys, still without head coach Pat Erskine, lose on the road at Lamar Consolidated, 60-43, to fall to 1-3 in district. Derion Green led the Warriors with ten points, nine for James Rivera. Coach Erskine remains sidelined after having a heart procedure almost two weeks ago. Coach Erskine told me Tuesday afternoon he is doing better, and that it's going to be a slow process.
Edna girls fall to 0-2 in district, losing at home to Palacios, 58-54. Lexi Reyes leads the Cowgirls with 16 points.

    • Ratley Makes NFL Debut for Browns

      A former Yoakum football standout made his NFL debut on Sunday.  Damion Ratley, a former Yoakum Bulldog and sixth round draft pick out of Texas A&M, made his debut with the Browns on Sunday and recorded a team-high 82 yards in the losing effort.     • UHV Soccer Sweeps Jarvis Christian

      Elizabeth Reyes (FR/Edinburg, TX) and Lauren Leslie (SR/Falkirk, Scotland) each scored a pair of goals Saturday to help lift the University of Houston-Victoria women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over the Jarvis Christian Bulldogs in the Red River Athletic Conference match at The Cage.
