Victoria Commissioners vote to expand Citizens ER, plus more

Posted: Updated:

Victoria County Commissioners took the first steps towards approving an expansion of Citizens Medical Center's Emergency Department.

During their weekly meeting, Victoria commissioners approved two resolutions that will allow them to accept construction bids for expanding Citizen's Emergency Wing. The resolutions were approved after citizens' board of directors voted to renovate their emergency room to 2018 standards. County officials say the board has discussed renovating the emergency room for years and believe now is the best time to expand.

"That's something that they've talked about needing to do for a while. And, I think once it's done it'll be a good improvement to the hospital. It's certainly a big capital improvement project. These things take quite a while to do. But, we begin that process today and, once it's eventually done, I think the hospital will be a lot better because of it." exclaimed Victoria County Judge Ben Zeller.

If approved, construction on Citizens' Emergency Wing won't begin until early 2019.

Also, the Victoria County Public Health Department will bring in a new nurse practitioner to assist the department's HIV/AIDS Resources Program. Health officials asked county commissioner's for a nurse practitioner because their current staff travel over four hours once per month to evaluate HARP clients. With the new nurse, the health department will now have a qualified medical specialist available at all times. The new nurse practitioner will start on January 16th.
