UHV Golf Signs Former Titan

Posted: Updated:

UHV golf adds a former East state qualifyer. Former Victoria East High School standout Ben Lake made it official Wednesday afternoon signing a letter of intent to transfer to the University of Houston-Victoria to compete on the men’s golf team.

Lake, who signed with Western Alabama University out of high school, said he is looking forward to bringing his golf career back home to Victoria.

“Competing here is going to be fun,” said Lake. “I’ve competed here in Victoria before and am ready to compete here again. I have played with some of the guys (UHV Jaguars) when I was in high school and they are a great group and I look forward to competing with them again.”

Lake qualified his junior and senior years in high school for the UIL Class 5A State Tournament and became the first East golfer to qualify for state when he was a junior when he shot 69-76-145 at the regional tournament.

His junior year he finished tied for 62nd at the state tournament posting a score of 91-78-169, before bouncing back and cutting that finish in half when he tied for 32nd. Lake posted rounds of 80-76-156 at last year’s state tournament.

He earned second team all-state and first team all-region honors and was academic all-district all four years in high school.

“It’s exciting to have him as part of our team,” said UHV coach Christi Cano. “I knew Ben before he reached out to me and we are looking forward to having him with us. He should bring a positive impact to the team.”

Cano said pending some NAIA eligibility paperwork, Lake should be able to join the team in the spring.

Lake plans to major in biology while attending UHV.

“UHV is close to family and friends and the golf is great and I am ready to go,” said Lake on his joining the UHV program.
