SAN MARCOS -- A police officer has been shot and killed in San Marcos, the San Marcos Police Department confirmed Monday afternoon.

The unnamed officer was shot while serving a warrant in the Cottonwood Creek subdivision. The officer was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at 3:50 p.m., police say.

Police will not name the officer until his next of kin has been notified.

The shooting happened not from Bowie Elementary School, located at 4020 Monterey Oak, which was placed on lockdown.

The San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District says Bowie Elementary School is on lockdown, however, the incident happened after school was dismissed for the day at 3 p.m. The children who were waiting for their parents were kept inside. Children who were on school buses getting ready to leave for the day were brought back inside for the time being.

San Marcos police and the Hays County Sheriff’s Office are reportedly at the shooting scene with a SWAT team.

The San Marcos Daily Record reports the shooter was originally barricaded inside a home but at 4 p.m. the agency reported the suspect was in custody.

Governor Abbott today issued the following statement after a San Marcos police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty.

"Today we grieve for the family of the fallen San Marcos police officer, and we vow swift justice for the killer. The men and women in law enforcement put their lives on the line every day to protect and to serve our communities, and we will never forget their sacrifices. Cecilia and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family and to the entire San Marcos Police Department."
