H.S. Basketball Friday Finals

Here are Friday night's area high school basketball finals. West girls win twice at the Laredo tournament. The Warrior girls first beat Laredo LBJ, 65-48. Jocelyn Washington had 23 points, 11 for Carrie Lacy, Julie Jimenez scored 10. Then the West girls beat Laredo Martin, 61-35. Kennedy Youngblood led the Warriors with 14 points, 12 for Lacy. The West girls next play in that tournament Saturday at 9:30 a.m. vs. Laredo Nixon. East boys lose twice at the Needville tournament. They first lost to Pasadena Memorial, 53-43. Eight points apiece for Ed Clay and D'Ary Patton. The Titans then fall to Columbia, 62-56. Patton leads East with 12 points, while Quincy Johnson scored 11. St. Joe boys go 1-1 at the Bloomington tournament. The Flyers first beat Kenedy, 72-62. Tomas Young led STJ iwth 22 points, 16 for Tavion Vareta. St. Joe then lost to Palacios, 85-42. Emiliano Garza led the Flyers with 11 points. The Flyers next play at the tourney Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against Danbury for third place. St. Joe girls go 1-1 at the Industrial tournament. The Lady Flyers first beat the host team, 50-42. Alisa Novosad led the Lady Flyers with 19 points, 14 for Maiya Tillman, Maegan Marshall scored 11. Then St. Joe lost to Hallettsville, 52-25. Novosad led the Lady Flyers with 16 points. St. Joe girls play Needville Saturday for the tourney title.

    • AP State Poll Gets Shaken Up

      An emotional home win for Cuero football, not enough to put the Gobblers back in the AP State 4A top ten Monday. The Gobblers, now 2-1 on the season. Big move by an area team in the state 3A poll. Goliad, up two spots to number two in the state after beating previously undefeated George West. Yoakum stays at number ten in the 3A poll. In the state 2A rankings, Shiner goes up a spot to number two. Refugio, moving up one to number five. 

    • East and West Volleyball Both Stumble in District Play

      Both VISD volleyball programs were in action Monday, with East hosting Corpus Christi Carroll at home, and West on the road at CC Veterans Memorial. Both teams struggled against tough opponents, with East falling in five sets and West in four. The loss for West marks the first district defeat for the Warriors this season.  Lexi Morris had a big game for the Warriors, recording 8 kills to go along with 25 digs.     • Calhoun Tops Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, 55-47

      The Calhoun Sandcrabs defeated Mexican high school Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Port Lavaca on Saturday, 55-47. The win marks Calhoun's first on the season at Sandcrab Stadium, and levels their record on the young season at 1-1. Nuevo Leon took a five point lead into the half, but Sandcrabs quarterback Connor Kestler led an offensive charge in the third quarter that put Calhoun ahead for good.  JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
