Dewitt County Sheriff holds Church Safety program in Yorktown

Posted: Updated:

The Dewitt County Sheriff's Office held a church safety and awareness program this evening at the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown.

The program was held in front of a crowd of church goers looking for answers after the Sutherland Springs tragedy. The program is aimed at informing church members proper safety and awareness tips they can use in the event of an active shooter incident. The Sheriff's office is also hoping to start a conversation about mass shootings so people are better prepared. We spoke to church Pastor Andrew Lemlyn who said it breaks his heart holding a program like this because of the recent mass shootings.

"It, it's kept me up at night. I know that with an increase occurrence of mass violence in our nation, I know that the chance of me knowing someone and loving someone that is affected by that violence has increased. And, believe me, that keeps me awake at night, at times."

Dewitt County Sheriff Carl Bowen says you should always know where the exits are in a building and to act fast if a shooter is active to make sure you and your family are safe. If you have any questions about what to do in an active shooter situation, you can contact the Dewitt County Sheriff's Office at 361-275-5734.
