Edna Football Regional Playoff Preview

Posted: Updated:

Is it right to call a high school football team still in the playoffs an underdog? Maybe it is in the case of Edna. Then again, maybe it's not. Sure the Cowboys are 8-4. but their losses are to teams that are state-ranked, like East Bernard, Refugio, Yoakum and Hallettsville. Edna lost to East Bernard and Refugio by a combined 14 points. During the season the Cowboys also beat two teams still alive in the playoffs, Sweeny and Van Vleck. Edna has won its first two playoff games by a total of 50 points. I asked Edna head coach Jerry Long how impressed he was with the win over Lyford. "Extremely. Our kids set a goal to play in December. Obviously we had to get that second round win for that to happen. We brought in a new staff, a lot of new coaches, with a new system, kids learning new things and we're getting better at the right time. As a coach, that's what you hope for."
