UHV Men's Soccer Heads To Nationals

The Mobile Rams, the opening-round opponent for the University of Houston-Victoria will be no stranger to the Jaguars.

The Rams and Jaguars, who meet in the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Champion Opening Round on Saturday in Mobile, Ala., have met four other times through the course of the Jaguars eight years of existence.

The Rams will bring a 2-1-1 record over the Jaguars into the 5 p.m. contest, with the winner advancing to the NAIA National Tournament in Delray Beach, Fla., on Nov. 27-Dec. 2.

Mobile, winners of three straight, captured the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament with a 5-1 win over William Carey. The Rams bring a 13-3-2 record into the contest.

The Rams have outscored their opponents 44-12 and hold a 232-193 edge in shots, which includes a 117-56 advantage in shots on goal.

Seniors Sam White and Newton Henry have been the go-to players for the Rams. White leads the team with 10 goals and seven assists, while Newton has chipped in nine goals and six assists. The Rams have 10 other players that have scored goals as well.

In goal, junior goalkeeper Guilheme Altoe has been the key player with 37 saves and 13 goals allowed. He also has four shutouts and a 11-3-2 record to his credit.

The Jaguars meanwhile, have not lost in their last 10 games and have compiled an 8-0-2 record during that stretch

After claiming their first-ever Red River Athletic Conference regular season title, the Jaguars then claim the RRAC Tournament title with identical 2-0 wins over Houston St. Thomas and LSU-Alexandria.

St. Thomas is the only foe both teams have gone against this season with the Rams coming away with a 2-1 victory and the Jaguars a pair of 2-0 wins.

The Jaguars have utilized a balanced scoring attack with 16 different players tallying goals. Espen Hansen leads the way with six goals and one assist, while Brody Patience follows with five goals and one assist.

Adrian Mendoza, Connagh Wilks, Reece Hannigan and Adrian Mendoza have each contributed three goals, while Rodriguez has a team-high five assists.

UHV goalkeeper PalemonPlasncarte has recorded eight shutouts and a 11-2-2 record in goal this season. He has allowed just 11 goals, while recording 48 saves.

The UHV-Mobile winner will play the St. Thomas (Fla.)-McConnell (Ga.) winner in the opening match at Delray Beach on Tuesday, Nov. 28
