Graduation Ceremony for FEMA Corps Teams who assisted with Harvey Recovery

Posted: Updated:

Austin, Texas – After completing 10 months and 1,700 service hours, some spent helping the survivors of Hurricane Harvey, a number of FEMA Corps and National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) Traditional AmeriCorps teams will be honored with a ceremony in Houston on Wednesday, Nov.15. Scott Thomas, Deputy Federal Coordinating Officer for Hurricane Harvey, will speak at the graduation ceremony. The location and hours for the ceremony are as follows:

The Lone Star Convention & Expo Center
9055 Airport Rd.
Conroe, TX  77303
Ceremony starts at 9 a.m.

FEMA Corps Members come from all walks of life and join for a variety of reasons. “Being able to get out into the community after the disaster, when survivors saw FEMA walking through their community and helping them sign up for assistance, you could see the relief in their faces,” said Theodore Harkness who joined FEMA Corps to gain management experience and has been hired to work in FEMA’s Workforce Development Division. “They were also thankful that FEMA was coming to them, instead of them having to come to us.”

Gregory Dumas who hails from Sterling, MA and comes from a family with a rich history of public service, said he joined FEMA Corps “because he wanted to follow in his family’s footsteps and serve his country.”

FEMA Corps is a partnership between FEMA and NCCC AmeriCorps open to young adults between the ages of 18 to 24.
