VPD to hold women's self defense classPosted: Updated:
In a worst case scenario, you alone are responsible for your safety.
This Victoria Police Department's free program will help you create your own plan of action and add a number of simple but effective self defense techniques to your personal safety toolbox.
No prior training is needed nor do you have to be in top physical condition to complete the course.
During the first class, police will discuss the risks of personal safety: awareness, reduction, recognition and avoidance, which is ninety percent of self defense education. We also address securing your home, traveling safely, self defense and the law, the decision to resist and the use of weapons.
The second and third days are dedicated to developing the physical techniques. Instructors will demonstrate and explain the mechanics of each technique then give you some time to practice the moves before moving to dynamic impact training on a padded target. It’s at this point you discover how much power you actually possess and which techniques work best for you.
It’s not all punching and kicking though. You’ll also be taught techniques for escaping chokes and grabs as well as defending yourself from the ground.

The class will be on August 28, 29 and 30 at 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.
