VC’s Gonzales Center offering nurse aide, medication aide courses this fall

Posted: Updated:

Victoria College’s Gonzales Center will offer nurse aide and medication aide courses this fall in an effort to meet anticipated demand in both professions.

“The nurse aide profession is expected to expand by 15 percent over the next 10 years,” said VC Allied Health Continuing Education Director Shari Gould. “There are 1,634 nurse aides currently employed in our region. There are 290 who are age 55 and older. Most will likely retire over the next 10 years, so there will be a demand for new nurse aides to fill those positions. The same is true for the medication aide profession.”

The nurse aide classes at VC’s Gonzales Center will be held Monday through Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., Aug. 28 to Nov. 1. The deadline to register is Aug. 21.

The medication aide classes will be held Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Aug. 14 to Dec. 13. The deadline to register is Aug. 7.

Scholarships are available for both courses.

“Almost all of our students are eligible for scholarships,” Gould said. “All potential students are encouraged to apply. Financial aid will pay for qualified applicants for nurse aide courses, but a potential student must apply early enough for it to be processed.”
