UHV awards Gross, Hockenbury Athletes of the Year

Posted: Updated:

UHV seniors Aubri Hockenbury and Andrew Gross were named the UHV Athletes of the Year on Monday at the annual UHV Jaguars athletic awards banquet.

Through the regular season, Hockenbury led the Jaguars softball team with a .393 batting average, 52 RBIs, 114 total bases and a .786 slugging percentage. The outfielder/second baseman also leads the team in home runs, after she tied the UHV single-season home run record with 15. Hockenbury will look to continue helping the Jaguars as they prepare for the Red River Athletic Conference tournament, which begins on Friday.

UHV baseball's Andrew Gross received his second straight athlete of the year award, on the same day that he was named RRAC Baseball Player of the Week. On Saturday, he hit his 38th home run for the Jaguars to tie the UHV all-time career home run record that was set by David Baker in 2011. Baker accomplished that mark in four years, while it only took Gross two seasons. The first baseman led the Jaguars with a .404 batting average this season.
