Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka's hopes of returning to pitch again this season hit a snag Friday when the team announced Tanaka is heading back to New York with what was termed "general soreness" in his pitching arm.

The soreness has caused the team to shut Tanaka down from throwing. He will do strengthening exercises at Yankee Stadium.

Tanaka has been sidelined since early July with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He decided to rehab the injury instead of undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Tanaka had appeared to take a big step toward a September return by throwing 49 pitches in a simulated game on Thursday.

The Yankees are in Toronto for a weekend series against the Blue Jays.
