All four VISD track teams competing at the Area meet at Gregory-Portland Wednesday finished in the top three in the standings. The West boys won the Area team title for the first time. Todd Mickey of the Warriors took first in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs. Gamar Girdy took gold in the 100 meter dash, and Girdy teamed up with Qualian Bryant, Rashod Jackson, and Eric Castillo to win the 4x100 meter relay.
The East boys were second in the team standings, and nine of their athletes made it to Regionals. Michael Gonzalez won the long jump at 22-8, and Gonzalez was on the Area champion 4x200 meter relay with Kenyon Kimbro, Datryan Evans and Anton Franklin with a winning time of 1:30.82.
The East girls were second in the team standings, and all 12 of their girls qualified for Regionals. Kasey Heitzmann took gold in the pole vault at 10-6, the 100 meter hurdles at 15.2, the 300 meter hurdles, plus she won silver in the triple jump at 35-6.5 and teamed up with Jackie Greathouse, Erica Barnett and Lauren Rangnow to take second in the 4x400 meter relay at 4:10. Anne Wozniak won the Area title in the high jump at 5-2, and Rangnow took silver in the 100 meter hurdles, along with silver for the 4x200 meter relay.
The West girls were third in the team standings. First place winners for the Warrior girls were Bailey Daniel in the triple jump at 36-3.5; Mikayla Roell in the 100 meter dash at 12.64; the 4x100 meter relay (Mikayla Roell, Silvey Estrada, Bailey Daniel, Saige McLarty) at 49.73; and the 4x200 meter relay (Roell, Mercedes Ellison, Estrada, McLarty) at 1:46.
