Bilbao, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Kenneth Faried scored 16 points, leading the United States to a commanding 106-71 win over the Dominican Republic to clinch first place in Group C.
One of the least heralded members of Team USA, Faried has done most of the heavy lifting so far in group play. The Denver Nuggets forward ranks second on the team in scoring and first in rebounding, averaging 14.8 points and 7.8 boards through four games. He's also shooting a remarkable 78.4 percent from the field.
The US improved to 4-0 and have outscored opponents by an average of 35.8 points per game.
DeMarcus Cousins had 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting, James Harden and Anthony Davis each netted 10 points and Steph Curry stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, seven assists and six rebounds. All 12 members of the US team scored for the second straight game.
Victor Liz scored 15 points to pace the Dominicans, who fell to 2-2 in the Group. Francisco Garcia, the Dominican Republic's lone NBA player and fifth leading scorer in the tournament entering Wednesday, did not play while resting a sore ankle.
After a back-and-forth opening period, the Americans broke it open in the middle two quarters. Faried scored six straight points midway through the second, and Davis capped an 8-0 run with a baseline jumper that gave the US a 44-29 lead. Later, Rudy Gay beat the halftime buzzer with a bank shot from the right wing to send the US into halftime with a 15-point lead.
Curry's layup at 5:21 of the third gave the Americans their first 20-point lead, and they were never challenged the rest of the way.
The United States have a final tune-up game for the elimination round against Ukraine on Thursday, while Dominicans conclude group play against Turkey.
