The University of Houston-Victoria women's soccer team wasted little time in assaulting the UHV women's soccer record book in their season opener on Saturday.
Sheilat Akapo (Houston) became the first UHV women's soccer player to turn a hat trick scoring three goals for a UHV single-game record in a 3-0 victory over the University of the Southwest Lady Mustangs. Akapo also set a single-game record for most points score with six.
Akapo put the Jaguars up 1-0 in the first half with an open goal after steal in the 23rd minute. She would add two more goals in the second half to ice the season-opening win at The Cage.
Akapo pounded home her second goal in the 57th minute on a breakaway off an assist from Alexis Hernandez (Arlington) who found Akapo on a long pass down the left side. With just over 10 minutes to play Akapo struck again off an assist from Briana Holmes (Milton, Fla.).
Jennifer Sanchez (San Antonio) was in goal for the shutout, the fifth of her career for the sophomore. She finished with three saves.
The Jaguars (1-0) return to action on Friday in San Antonio when they take on Science and Arts of Oklahoma at Our Lady of the Lake University at 3 p.m.
