SAN ANTONIO – The Our Lady of the Lake Saints used three
second-half goals to hand the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars women’s
soccer team its first loss of the season Saturday.
Dominating offensively in the second half, the Saints
overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit to edge the Jaguars 3-2.
The loss drops the Jaguars to 2-1 on the season, while
the Saints go to 1-0.
The Jaguars jumped in front early as Haley Hicks took a
pass from Nereyda Martinez and hammered it home in the 10th minute for a 1-0
UHV’s Sheilat Akapo continued her assault on goal as she
put the Jaguars in front with her sixth goal of the season in the 33rd minute
off an assist by Ciara Devore. It was the third straight game for Akapo to
score a goal for the Jaguars.
The Saints slowly chipped away at the Jaguars’ lead in
the second half by holding the Jaguars to just one shot in the period. Megan
Huerta got off the lone shot for the Jaguars in the second half in the 61st
minute, only to have OLLU goalkeeper Alyssa Mora turn the shot away.

put the Saints on the board in the 59th minute. Victoria Vazquez would add a
goal in the 71st minute and Stephania Vazquez off an assist by Diaz added the
game winner in the 82nd minute.
OLLU outshot the Jaguars 16-8 including a 12-6 edge in
shots on goal.
Jennifer Sanchez, in goal for the Jaguars had nine saves.
The Jaguars will head to Oklahoma this week to face
Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday and Mid-American Christian on Saturday.
