Five members of the University of Houston-Victoria
softball team have been named to the 2014 National Fastpitch Coaches
Association’s NAIA Southwest All-Region Team announce today.
Senior Marley Moehrig (Victoria), junior Rachel Laird
(LaMarque) and freshman Shelby Smith (La Porte) were named to the first team,
while senior Ashley Winegeart (Corpus Christi) and freshman Savannah Crittenden
(La Porte) were selected to the second team.
Moehrig, who was named to the all-region team at third
base, compiled a .419 batting average while leading the team in triples (5),
home runs (11), RBI 62), total bases (122), and slugging percentage (.787). She
also has 65 hits, scored 44 runs and finished with 14 doubles.
Laird, who was named to the team as an outfielder, displayed
her speed as she led the Jaguars with a .564 batting average that includes a
current 45-game hitting streak, a single-season high 92 hits and 29 multi-hit
games. She also led the team in runs (67), walks (24), on-base percentage
(.622) and a UHV single-season high 43 stolen bases.
Smith was selected to the team as a first baseman and
paced the Jaguars with a season-high 168 at bats and 19 doubles. She also had a
.482 batting average with three triples, five homes runs and 59 RBI.
Winegeart was selected at shortstop, while Crittenden was
an at-large selection.
Winegeart compiled a .416 batting average with 45 runs,
44 RBI, 12 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 22 stolen bases, while
Crittenden had a .305 average with 28 RBI, 20 runs, eight doubles, two triples
and a home run. Crittenden was also 12-5 in the circle with a 2.34 ERA in 22
games. She allowed 51 runs on 92 hits and 52 walks with 43 strikeouts in 110.2
