UHV Softball Player Earns Award

University of Houston Victoria’s Shelby Smith carried a
hot bat for the Jaguars this past week and for her play has been recognized as
the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Female Athlete of the


Smith, a freshman from LaPorte, shared the honor with
Lindenwood University-Belleville pitcher Michele Pilster.


Smith compiled a 0.818 batting average with a 1.636
slugging percentage in leading the Jaguars to a 4-0 week with a pair of wins
each over Huston-Tillotson and Texas College. She went 9-for-11 at the plate
with three doubles, three triples, five RBI and six runs scored as the
designated player.


For the season, Smith has compiled a 0.486 batting
average in 43 games with a 0.723 slugging percentage and a 0.519 on-base
percentage. She has a team-high 17 doubles and has also hit four home runs and
three triples with 50 RBI and 43 runs scored.


Smith has helped the Jaguars win at least 30 games for
the seventh straight year and has hit safely in 14 of her last 15 games.


Smith and the Jaguars will participate in the A.I.I.
Conference Softball Championships beginning Thursday in Lawrenceville, Ga.,
when they face the University of British Columbia in a 10 a.m. (CST) contest.
The winner will meet California State-San Marcos in a 3 p.m. matchup, while the
loser will play Friday at 10 a.m.
