UHV Softball Player Earns Award

University of Houston Victoria’s Rachel Laird extended
her UHV-leading hitting streak to 34 games this past week and for her play has
been recognized as the Association of Independent Institutions Conference
Female Athlete of the Week.


Laird, a 5-foot-4 centerfielder from LaMarque, has played
a key role for the Jaguars all season from her leadoff spot in the order where
she has successfully hit in 35 of the Jaguars’ 37 games. This past week she
compiled a .571 batting average going 8-for-14 in a pair of wins over NCAA
Division I Prairie View A&M and a pair of Our Lady of the Lake University
as the Jaguars improved their record to 26-11 on the year.


She scored seven runs, a had a double, was 4-for-4 in
stolen bases and compiled a .643 slugging percentage in the four games.


The left-handed slap hitter leads the Jaguars with a .545
batting average, 66 hits, 48 runs, 36 stolen bases and a .618 on-base
percentage. She also has a .570 slugging percentage, nine RBI and three doubles
on the season for the 19th-ranked Jaguars.
