Two members of the University of Houston-Victoria
softball team earned recognition on the 2014 NAIA Softball All-America teams
Outfielder Rachel Laird was named to the second team,
while freshman first baseman Shelby Smith received honorable mention
Laird was named to the Association of Independent
Institutions All-Conference first team and was also selected to the NFCA’s NAIA
All-Southwest Region first team after helping the Jaguars to a berth in the
NAIA Opening Round Championships and a 33-15 record.
The junior from La Marque compiled a team-high .564
batting average and led the team with 67 runs, 92 hits, 24 walks, a .622
on-base percentage and a UHV single-season record 43 stolen bases. She also had
16 RBI, four doubles and a home run.
Smith, a freshman from La Porte, was named the A.I.I.
Conference Freshman of the Year and earned selection to the NFCA’s NAIA
All-Southwest Region first team as well. She led the Jaguars with 168 at bats
and 19 doubles as she compiled a .482 batting average with 59 RBI, 47 runs, 81
hits, 17 stolen bases, five home runs, and three triples.
