University of Houston-Victoria sophomore forward Sheilat
Akapo (Houston) has been named to the 2013 NSCAA/Continental Tire NAIA Women’s
All-Southwest Region soccer team.
Akapo was one of 11 players selected to the Southwest
Region squad that included five players from Southwestern Assemblies of God,
three from Science and Arts of Oklahoma and one each from Mid-American
Christian and John Brown. She is the first UHV women’s soccer player to earn
“This is a great honor for Sheilat and our program,” UHV
soccer coach Adrian Rigby said. “She is a very hard worker and has brought a
lot to our program in just her second year of playing organized soccer.”
Akapo set two single-game marks for most goals and most
points in a game as she twice scored three goals in a game this season for the
Jaguars. She tallied three goals in wins over the University of the Southwest
and Huston-Tillotson and her seven points against HTU also set the mark for
most points by a Jaguar in a game.
Akapo also had six single-season marks with records for
goals (13), points (29), game-winning goals (3), shots (42), shots of goal (24)
and hat-trick goals (2).
She also earned recognition by being named to the
Association of Independent Institutions’ all-conference second team.
