In a physical match Saturday, the University of Houston-Victoria men's soccer team opened the 2013 season with a 2-0 victory over the University of the Southwest Mustangs.
The Jaguars improved to 3-0 against the Mustangs in the four-year series.
Hector Gonzalez put the Jaguars up for good in the 29th minute when he converted on a penalty kick after Jack Pluckwell was tackled inside the penalty box.
Daniel Lozano tacked on an insurance goal with 28 seconds to play.
The Jaguars outshot the Mustangs 12-6 and on-goal 5-3 in a match that drew a total of 30 fouls.
Henrik Hundesruegge of Germany was in goal for the shutout in his first match as a Jaguar. He finished with three saves.
The Jaguars (1-0) return to action on Friday in San Antonio when they take on Science and Arts of Oklahoma at Our Lady of the Lake University at 5 p.m.
