After pulling of two last inning victories on Sunday, the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars were unable to make it three in a row on Monday.
Wayland Baptist's Corey Weldon came on in the ninth with two on and no outs to snuff out the Jaguars' threat and preserve a 3-1 victory for the Pioneers at Riverside Stadium.
Joshua Boothe opened the ninth with a double down the right-field line and Stephen Shorkey drew a pinch-hit walk. On came Weldon who retired all three batters he faced. After Ryan Pearsall put down a sacrifice bunt to move pinch runners Nathan Falkenstine and Tyler Vakey to third and second, Weldon got Matthew Herrera to pop out to second baseman Brayden Blackwell on the outfield grass and then ended the game with a swinging strikeout of Dylan Blaha.
The Pioneers (1-2) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the sixth and added an insurance run in the eighth, before the Jaguars (3-6) finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth.
Blaha opened the short eighth-inning rally with a single to left and stole second before racing to third on a single to left by Ryan Suescun. After Suescun stole second, Blaha raced home on a wild pitch, but it would be the only run the Jaguars could push across.
The Jaguars will jump right back into action Tuesday when they face Texas A&M-International in a 2 p.m. ballgame in Laredo.
