Rangers acquire Donnie Murphy; release Hanson

Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers claimed infielder Donnie Murphy off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.

The move was made in light of Jurickson Profar's expected absence of 10-to-12 weeks. He has a torn muscle in his shoulder.

The 31-year-old Murphy hit .255 in 46 games with the Cubs in 2013.

In addition, the Rangers placed pitcher Tommy Hanson on irrevocable waivers, received pitcher Seth Rosin on a waiver claim from the Los Angeles Dodgers and placed outfielder Engel Beltre on the 60-day disabled list with a fractured right tibia.

Texas picked up Hanson earlier in the offseason in the hope that he could provide depth, but the team opted to release him and pay his $125,000 termination fee rather than pay him the $2 million had he opened the year on the 25-man roster.

Tanner Scheppers' first career start will come on Opening Day. The planned Opening Day starter, Yu Darvish, will open the season on the disabled list.
