Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics outrighted the contract of Corey Brown to their Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento and the outfielder, in turn, has elected to become a free agent.

Brown was designated for assignment earlier this month after the Athletics signed pitcher Eric O'Flaherty.

The Athletics had acquired Brown from Washington on Dec. 19 for cash considerations. He spent most of the 2013 season at Triple-A Syracuse and was 2-for-12 with a home run in 14 games for the Nationals as a September call-up.

Brown was selected by the Athletics in the first round of the 2007 draft, but was traded to the Nationals on Dec. 16, 2010 as part of the Josh Willingham deal.

Over parts of three seasons with Washington, Brown has batted .175 with two homers and four RBI in 36 games.
