On Tuesday, Victoria resident Amber Thomas was excited about learning how to eat healthy at HEB Plus in Victoria.
For years, Thomas has struggled to keep her weight down but that has all changed.
"I woke up one morning and I wanted to change my life. I am not sure if it was the TV or what but I ended up on the HEB website filled out an application and took a leap of faith,” Thomas said.
Thomas prayers were quickly answered.
She was one of 15 competitors chosen out of 4,000 applicants nationwide to participate in HEB's 3rd annual weight loss challenge.
This year HEB also added 15 of their employees to the mix.
Victoria HEB Plus Operational Manager Jason Brown was also one of the lucky ones chosen.
Brown originally filled out an application three years ago but never sent it out because he was afraid he couldn't make the changes.
"You may ask what changed in the three years’ time well just an understanding moving forward with life you start to understand things about yourself and you don't want you son or family to go down that road...you want to lead a healthier lifestyle,” Brown said.
Both Brown and Thomas have set a long term goal to lose a 100.
The 14-week competition which started at the beginning of January requires competitors to eat right, work out, blog about their experience and try to find a way to inspire other in their community to do the same.
At the end of the competition, the competitor who has made a complete transformation of their lifestyle will win $10,000.
Dietitian Kylie Bentley helped the two competitors picked out some healthy groceries.
“It’s really about creating healthier habits for them their family through improving their nutrition as well as their physical fitness and getting them to move around more and inspiring everyone around them to do the same thing,” Bentley said.
